The Changeling Detective is my first urban 'fantasy' (not sure what else to call it) story. It was developed from a short story that originally appeared in the 'Masques' anthology published by the Canberra Speculative Fiction Guild in March, 2009. The anthology contains a lot of good stories from some of the new talent in Australian speculative fiction. Find out more about it here.

The detective with a thousand faces thought he was a mutant — a one in a million freak of nature. Now, he's not so sure.

Canberra, the outback capital of Australia, is where you will find the Triple A Detective Agency and movie characters like Sam Spade are just one of the guises used by the owner of the Triple-A detective agency; it's also not a bad way to attract women.

However, when a foul-smelling crime boss from Sydney and his bodyguard take umbrage at some photographs he took while on a job its time for the Changeling Detective (real name unknown) to learn some nasty facts about his life and background.

It seems he's not the only mutant in town and when his new girlfriend brings magic into his life he learns that the world is nowhere near as simple as he thought it was.
